Research and Development Projects

Mobybriquettes

The MOBYBRIQUETTES project, funded for energy efficiency initiatives, aimed to develop a mobile system to convert agricultural waste into biofuels such as briquettes or pellets. The objective was to optimize logistics and valorize plant residues through a mobile unit for on-site collection and processing.

Research and Development Projects

Smart Island

The SMART ISLAND project aims to demonstrate the technical, economic, and financial feasibility of a Smart Community on the Island of Lampedusa. The majority of smaller Italian and Mediterranean islands are not connected to the mainland power grid, with electricity production relying on oversized diesel generators to cover summer peak loads due to tourism. This situation leads to high costs borne by the public. The project intends to transform the island’s power grid and the waste and water cycles from centralized processes to Smart grids and Smart cycles to improve the environmental sustainability of the island.

Research and Development Projects

i-NEXT

The i-NEXT project focuses on energy efficiency in buildings and on sustainable mobility and logistics, utilizing energy from renewable sources. The main objective is to provide the Public Administration with integrated technological and management solutions to contain the economic, environmental, and social costs resulting from energy consumption and the movement of people and goods.

Research and Development Projects

SETH

The SETH (Ship Emissions Treatment in Harbors) project was created to address the growing problem of air pollution in ports caused by ships, with a particular focus on the situation in Trieste. The main goal is to reduce harmful emissions released by berthed ships, even when their main engines are off and only auxiliary engines are running.

Research and Development Projects

Green Tenants

The Green Tenants project aims to improve the energy efficiency of tertiary sector buildings in Lazio, with the goal of reducing emissions and energy consumption. It involves the creation of an information technology platform and hardware components to monitor and control the use of resources in buildings.

Research and Development Projects

BloRin

The BloRin (Blockchain for decentralized management of Renewables) project aims to develop a blockchain-based platform to promote renewable energy and manage energy exchanges, supporting solar Smart Communities and interactions between energy producers and consumers (prosumers). The platform will also manage charging infrastructures for electric vehicles and coordinate exchanges with the electricity distributor. Blockchain technology will be used to manage and aggregate energy exchanges between prosumers and to provide balancing services. A mobile application for data visualization and verification via blockchain is also planned. The project involves Exalto energy & innovation, Regalgrid, s.el.i.s. Lampedusa s.p.a., sea società elettrica di Favignana, and the University of Palermo.

Research and Development Projects

DSM4islands

The new three-year project “DSM4islands” started in December 2024 with the participation of the University of Cyprus and EPL Technology Frontiers Ltd in a transnational network. The project aims to develop solutions that demonstrate the value of Demand-Side Management (DSM) to maximize the use of Variable Renewable Energy (VRE) in isolated power systems.
